Ironback armchair

This armchair had had several layers of re-upholstery done on top of the original, so it was wonderful to be able to see what the orignal maker had in mind when it was made. The chair was stripped down to the frame and rebuilt in the traditional French Crapaud style, named because of the toad-like shape made by the back and lumbar. Materials are mainly stitiched onto ironback chairs as opposed to tacked onto a wooden frame. The client chose two contrasting fabrics to set off the inside of the chair from the outside.

Mid-Century Modern

In the mid twentieth century design and techniques were changing rapidly. This chair is an example of how techniques were changing but elements of the old techniques were still around. Unfortunately the spring unit of this lovely chair was broken so I rebuilt it from scratch using traditional techniques, and used more modern materials to create the back and the seat pad.

Parker Knoll Froxfield

This classic chair was re-built in the traditional Parker Knoll method. Much of the original upholstery was still on the chair, which makes the job of reconstructing the original look of the chair much easier.

Ikea office chair

This was a boring old Ikea office chair with a very dull top fabric. The client liked the feel of the chair but was totally uninspired by the look, so she chose a beautiful wool fabric from Moon in Chantruse to better fit into her office colour scheme.

Prayer chair

This lovely old prayer chair has been re-built using traditional methods but with a modern finish. I love the way that the stitching at the top of the chair has created a beautiful sweep to the shelf. It was like moulding the shape from the horse hair beneath.

Desk chair

Sally and I both agreed that this poor little desk chair was in dire need of some deep tlc. Not only had the top fabric been torn to shreds but the last re-upholstery was poorly executed with inappropriate methods. It was stripped down to the frame and carefully restored to it's original glory using traditional methods and materials. This lovely old chair is once again the centrepiece of the room.
